how to be disciplined

Recently I talked about motivation and I mentioned that discipline is what’s most important for long term success. This article will highlight strategies that I’ve found useful for maintaining consistency and discipline in my life.

First, I highly recommend the guide to motivation to get started,

Once you’re revved up, I want you to maintain a curious attitude towards strengthening your ability to delay gratification. It’s easy to binge on unheealthy food, pick up addictions, waste the afternoon playing games etc. But that doesn’t make you better as a person, don’t think of hitting the end goal, just focus on delaying gratification, and practicing that so you become a stronger person. Some examples are doing work you don’t want to do, postponing your meals, exercising daily etc. Doing the harder, less enticing work because you know it’ll make you stronger.

Find a purpose for the habits you want to build, ask yourself why you are doing it. For example, I exercise daily because I want to feel good about my body and I want to be stronger. Later in life, I want to be muscular, lean and healthy. Knowing where you want to be in 10 years, then breaking it up into what you can do daily to get there gives purpose to your activities.

Once you know why you’re doing it, count down from 5 and just start it. As much as it sucks, our motivation is at its prime when we just start thinking about it, and often out of laziness we talk ourselves out of it within moments. Before that happens is where your power is, when you know you have to do something, just execute.

I also highly recommend the use of a calendar. It allows you to prioritize what’s important to you, cut out the unnecessary stuff and also schedule in relaxation time. Just like yin and yang, productivity must be met with relaxation and often during relaxation we’re stuck thinking about our to-do list. Schedule your breaks and enjoy it, you’ve earned it.

Lastly, I just want to emphasise that discipline is a skill, a muscle that can be developed. Starting something new is always challenging, even if that means developing your discipline and self-control. Just get started, stay persistent and watch as week by week you get more and more disciplined with yourself. Slow and steady improvements, keep strengthening that muscle and self-discipline will become easier than ever before.

Whenever you want to just be lazy and lounge about, consider this, what can you do now to strength your discipline first before you lounge about. What can you do first that’s a little uncomfortable but what must be done, and then you can be lazy. Watch it transform your natural drive towards wanting to do more.
